Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort marked Thai National Elephant Day with a meaningful programme celebrating Thailand’s most revered animal through cultural traditions, conservation awareness and community engagement.

Located in the lush hills of Chiang Rai’s Golden Triangle, overlooking the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar, the luxury jungle retreat is home to the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF), where rescued elephants roam in a natural environment and guests learn about ethical elephant care. The resort’s annual Thai National Elephant Day celebration brought together mahouts, local students, artisans and guests to honour Thailand’s iconic animal while raising awareness about responsible elephant tourism and wildlife conservation.

“Thai National Elephant Day is an important reminder of the deep cultural and spiritual connection between Thailand and elephants,” said Jean-Marc Pougnet, General Manager of Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort. “At Anantara Golden Triangle, we are proud to celebrate this day by sharing knowledge, supporting our local community and inspiring the next generation to appreciate and protect these extraordinary animals.”

The programme began with a spirit house ceremony and the traditional Pakham blessing ritual at the Elephant Camp. Rooted in mahout culture, these ceremonies honoured spiritual guardians and offered prayers for protection, harmony and wellbeing for both elephants and their caretakers.

A key highlight of the celebration was the Elephant Education programme, which welcomed approximately 50 students from local schools in Chiang Saen for a morning of hands-on learning with the resort’s elephant specialists and research team. Interactive stations included an Elephant Osteopathy demonstration, an Elephant and Mahout teamwork activity, and a behavioural science experiment designed to introduce students to elephant intelligence and care. Following the activities, students gathered for a Zero Waste lunch at the Rice Paddy, encouraging environmentally responsible choices while sharing a memorable experience surrounded by nature.

Throughout the day, guests explored a craft market in the resort lobby, where artisans from Chiang Rai showcased handmade creations including leather keyrings, embroidery, weaving, rock painting and traditional umbrella painting—celebrating the rich craft heritage of Northern Thailand.

The celebration concluded with the much-anticipated Elephant Buffet, where the herd enjoyed a colourful spread of fresh fruits and vegetables prepared especially for them. The joyful tradition symbolised gratitude and respect for elephants, long regarded as a national symbol of Thailand.
